Konflikt 47- Automated Platoon

Now that the new plastic Automatons are out for Konflikt 47, I've expanded my British into a playable Automated Platoon. I've always loved the robots, but the metals are awful to assemble so I wanted to wait for the plastics before I added more. The new kits are quite good and easy to put together (simply by nature of being plastic over metal). The new platoon is quite interesting mechanically and you can easily do an all-robot list just with the new platoon on its own, but I want to also discuss a couple of other options that I would consider adding to the Automated Platoon

Automated Platoon Rules

Increased range on the Data Transmission rule means you have way more board presence, as you don't have to keep things as close, and 12" range is quite big so you can have your whole army moving and shooting on 4s with tons of shots.

Being able to use Snap to Action! on all your MkII units as well as the Director is massive, and the activation control this gives you is really great. You have to take 1 MkII unit, but I would definitely take 2 as the 2 give you such a better bonus.

I should also note the British Commonwealth rules that are relevant for the Automated Platoon. Superior Codebreaking when you really need to go first can be game-changing, and although you can't Snap to Action! on it activating a unit first is still very big. Computational Systems is a rule all Automated units have, and no -1 to hit for moving and shooting is excellent despite First off the Line giving you a -1 penalty base. You can play around both of these things and have a force that can't be pinned, can always move and shoot and keep positioning wherever you need to go. Automated Recovery stops you from being Stunned on your Rift vehicles, which is all Automated vehicles and the other units I'll mention later on, and just taking less pins is great as a rule. The rules all combine to make an army that is hard to lock down, and outside of outright killing Automated units you can't really stop their advance.

Automated Units

MkIIC Automated Director- The command option for the Automatons, the Director is effectively a better MkII with a couple of special rules. They carry the M21 Light Tesla that you can upgrade a MkII with, and can take up to 2 more MkII in the unit that can also upgrade to another M21 for 2 or 3 Tesla Cannons in a unit which can do a lot of work in the right situation. Their Snap to Action! is slightly restricted to only being on units with Computational Systems, although that is every Automated unit and a good chunk of the armour options for Commonwealth so not really a downside when you're theming towards that, and at the cost of exhausting a Rift Dice they can Snap to Action! any 2 units on the table which is huge for activation control and doing what you want early in a turn. While Surging they can also Snap to Action! on 3 units, and they can't Snap at all when Exhausted so managing the Rift Dice on a Director is going to be quite important when playing an Automated Platoon. They do come with 2 Rift Dice though, so somewhat easier to mitigate in that regard.

MkI Automated Infantry Squads- Your basic Automated option, the MkI troops come with 6+ as their damage value so while not necessarily easy to kill they will take hits from higher pen weapons. They come base with MMGs which are not that great in Konflikt (outside of Fireflies and Totenkorps they won't hurt things that reliably, although they have a ton of shots) and should really always be upgraded in some way. They can take Combat Blades on the MMGs for relatively cheap which gives them +1 pen in combat and Tough Fighters, which is best used in combination with their Rift Enhancement to exhaust the Rift Dice for doubling their movement and attacks in combat, making them fairly scary threats for the turn once you've used the dice. Close combat isn't necessarily a place they really want to be, but it does make for a very interesting potential attack if you find yourself up against lighter infantry or can finish off a unit with a lucky charge. The HMGs on the other hand are a really great weapon to get through 6 and 7+ armour units as they can put out a ton of dice with +1 pen, and things that you can hit quite a lot will be taking damage fairly reliably. Squads without a high armour value will just get shredded by either variant of MkI, but generally speaking the HMGs are far better in a game where simply having a pen value matters a lot.

MkII Heavy Automated Infantry Squad- Bigger than MkIs in every way with 40mm bases, 7+ armour and Light Autocannons base, the MkIIs are real beefcake units and a key piece of the Automated Platoon. Hard to Kill makes them even tougher than 7+ would be normally, and is fairly standard for 7+ Rift units, although they are slower than most being Automated and 4" movement without a Surging dice. Their weapons are all decent, with the Light Autocannon being able to take Combat Blades for +1 pen and Tough Fighter, the Heavy Autocannon being just a better version of the Light and the M21 Tesla Cannon for some more Rift shenanigans. I don't think the Tesla is great on the base unit though, as it doesn't give an extra Rift Dice and you really want to have their dice active for Data Transmission, which negates First off the Line on the other bots so they don't have penalties to hit on their shots. The ability to exhaust their Rift Dice is interesting, although I personally don't think it's really great as it will turn off Data Transmission so the timing of it is very important unless you overlap bubbles of MkIIs.

Automated Mobile Platform 'Hunter'- The 1st of the Automated Mobile Platforms, the Hunter is quicker than the regular Automated Infantry and does have Hard to Kill, but is still only a single model. The Hunter is the anti-tank variant with a Light Anti-tank Gun (albeit with First Off the Line, so you need MkIIs around to avoid a -1 to hit and get to 3s on a Fire order) and you can spend your Rift Dice to bump it up to a Medium Anti-tank gun on a Fire order specifically. The Rift Enhancement means you can't move and get the benefit of a bigger gun, but it is great to have the versatility of being able to punch up into slightly bigger vehicles.

Automated Mobile Platform 'Bombardier'- The mortar equivalent of the Platforms, the Bombardier carries a Light Howitzer with Corrosive D3. This is quite good as although it won't be super great against really heavy vehicles it does mean it can do a ton of damage to all kinds of infantry and light vehicles, and can punch up on a gamble into bigger things. Like the Bombardier though it is only on a Fire order, so no movement when you do it.

Automated Mobile Platform 'Lancer'- 3 HMGs on a single, easy to hide and impossible to pin model. While it is easy to kill with only a single wound it does have Hard to Kill for an extra save, and for 99 points for what it does it is more than worth the cost. You can take up to 3 in an Automated Platoon, and depending on what you're facing these things will be fantastic. They're incredible into Totenkorps or Fireflies, less useful but still good into Ursus, other robots and Stahltruppen and all but useless into the heavier mechs.

Automated Carriers- A fairly light vehicle at 7+ armour, but can't be pinned and is quite quick with 2 Light Autocannons so is pretty decent. With Recce while Surging they're hard to lock down, and Fast gives you lots of movement options without a shooting penalty as an Automated unit, but you have to be careful not to overextend and move them away from MkII units.

'B for Bertie' Automated Infantry Hero- All the new waves for K47 have given their respective unit types a named Hero, and the Automated Infantry are no exception. While 120 points for a model with only 4" move and 6+ to damage may seem quite steep, I think Bertie actually has the potential to be one of the best pieces in a British army when used well. He is effectively just a hero version of a MkI Automaton with a HMG, so with the +1 Pen that is so important in K47, but also brings 3 points of Luck and a different Rift Ability. 3 Luck is huge, and means he can either let you reroll dice on important rolls, or simply stay alive when he would be killed up to 3 times in a game. With Hard to Kill for extra saves as well this makes Bertie a real pain to take down, and with Infiltrator and the ability to automatically pass any Outflank rolls you will always have him exactly where he needs to be at any given time. His Rift Ability is also quite interesting, as it lets you make an Advance order after another unit shoots at one of your units in line of sight to Bertie, so effectively letting him shoot twice a turn which is quite a good upgrade in output. It also acts as a kind of deterrent to shooting other units as if they're getting shot, Bertie can put more pins onto you in retaliation (assuming they aren't veteran vehicles or Fearless) or just take more models off after your own activation. Fireflies are a good counter here, as you can Regroup in Hell! to get out of line of sight of Bertie so he can't shoot back but this is also risky.

Additional Takes

Merlin Heavy Walker- A personal favourite of mine, the Merlin has Automated Systems so synergises with the Director and can be splashed in quite easily as an Armoured Walker Platoon. Thematically it works too as it has an AI core in it, so you aren't losing out on all-robot by taking a Merlin. The fists are decent melee weapons and I've had it punch into other mechs quite successfully, the HMG on the arm is great for firing into infantry of all kinds with the +1 pen and full shots being an arm weapon, and the Heavy Anti-Tank Gun with Improved HE is just a great gun all around, especially moving and shooting with 4s to hit. Being able to exhaust a Rift Dice to ignore a Vehicle Damage result is also really good, and it has to be remembered this is on top of the flat ignoring of Crew Stunned results as well.

Veteran Vehicles- The Humber and Churchill Meteor are potentially worth taking with an Automated Platoon, as you can Snap to Action! from the Director and get a bit more value out of it. The Churchill is a very expensive investment though, and with the Automated units also being on the expensive end you probably won't have a lot of activations if you take a Churchill.

On the Table- Guild Ball Alchemists, Brotherhood of Steel

With this hobby update comes another big change of tune, because it's again me jumping into a new game system. I've long looked at Guild Ball and after it's "death" last year I somewhat wrote it off, but recently found a ton of stuff at good deals and picked them all up to get into the game.

The faction that always caught my eye were the Alchemists Guild, and especially both versions of Katalyst. I managed to find the complete team roster for them (Kami and Soma are on the way) so I have all the options, but there are some I love the look of far more than others and will likely play a lot more (Crucible, Katalyst and Smoke). From here, the other Guild I picked up were the Ratcatchers, complete with Vet Graves and Bonesaw. I'll be getting these done fairly soon so they can also hit the table and I can call Guild Ball complete!

I also got a delivery for the last 2 sets I needed for the Brotherhood of Steel to finish off the faction for Fallout:Wasteland Warfare. Pretty simple, but I picked up all the named characters from Fallout 4 and got them painted so I can call the faction finished (and next up for Fallout is the Enclave and some robots)

On the Table- Kill Team Marines and Genestealer Cult

Hi again all, over the last few weeks I've been finishing up some models I've owned for a while (and some newer) that I've had for Kill Team and with the new edition I'm keen to start playing again.

First off was the team I bought last edition to play with, Astartes that I painted up as the Minotaurs chapter. Super easy Contrast paints over metallic basecoat for the armour, it was a look that I am happy with nonetheless and I will likely be replicating it in the future as a staple technique with large amounts of gold and bronze. Many of the Veterans I will be counting as a Deathwatch warband with the Chaplain leading, and the Chapter Master and Dreadnought I just had to finish the set of characters and if I can eventually use them later, I will.

After these I painted up a few Genestealer Cult models so I can play both Kill Team and Necromunda, having options for both. I'm most happy that I can use them in both games as is, and I think the shenanigans I can pull with these will be a good counterbalance to the Marines as well.

On the Table- Family, Wildfire

Another quicker update, I've been working on quite a lot of different Malifaux stuff in between some of the other projects I've posted lately and thought I'd put it up here.

I painted Kaeris and her keyword a little while ago, and I found them really fun to paint. The flames were something I don't very often attempt but here were a necessity, so being pushed out of my comfort zone a bit was a good thing and I'm pretty proud of them overall.

One of the biggest draws of Malifaux to me is the Weird West aesthetic a lot of the crews have, especially the gunslingers, and Perdita and her Ortega Family are a really big part of that I hadn't picked up until recently. I've had all the alt sculpts and her Avatar lying around for a while with the intention of playing her crew eventually, but now (especially with her gorgeous new art and title) I'm definitely looking forward to having the opportunity to put her on the table.

On the Table- Fallout, King Shark

Hobby update time, I'm still managing to make my way through a bunch of new things that I'm really happy to have finished and add to my collection.

After watching The Suicide Squad I really wanted to add King Shark, my favourite character from the movie, to my Batman Miniatures collection and particularly so I can use him in Suicide Squad. He was a really quick and fun mini to paint and I'm looking forward to adding him into my games.

I also finished up my Fallout collection for now with the core set (with bonus alien) and a set of Ghouls, giving me a ton of things I can use in game either as their own factions, for AI mode or as random encounters to threaten both sides on the table.

On the Table- Malifaux, Arena Rex

Another weekly update, I've had a few longer-standing orders arrive now so I'm getting into some projects I've really been looking forward to!

I picked up the Outcast starter set to make sure I still had all the Outcasts faction, and now I've painted them I also have the faction all painted too. There are a few small issues I have with the models (the Riflemen are pinheads) but overall the new preassembled stuff is pretty good quality I've found and they painted up pretty easily.

The first of the orders I've been waiting on, I'm really excited to get all the Helleniki for Arena Rex finished. With these I have the entire cohort painted, and I'm already looking at Gorgons or Morituri for more options to play with

On the Table- Wonder Woman 1984, Fallout

Another hobby update, I'm still working away on a bunch of projects and getting things completed. Jumping around a bit more to spice things up in lockdown, but I'm also managing to finish a whole lot of different systems so I can happily call everything fully painted and be ready to play everything once things open up again.

First up I finished a model I wanted to paint for a while, the Golden Eagle model from Wonder Woman 1984. This sculpt is really nice and was quite simple to paint up, so as a night's project it was a nice thing to get done

A few weeks ago I picked up a bunch of models for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare for the Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave. Both of these are my favourite factions in the lore and they even share a couple of models in-game so I have a bit of variety in terms of playing the game, and the sculpts are amazing. As a big Fallout fan, I'm really happy I finally bit the bullet and bought into the game because I can also use all my Batman terrain for it as well.

On the Table- Easterlings, Monsterpocalypse, Necromunda

Another fortnight, another update because I'm still in lockdown and painting a lot. Hanging out for games but at least I can manage to get things finished in the meantime.

Once all my Malifaux stuff from the last update was finished I started on the units I had leftover for Monsterpocalypse to finish that off. Quick paintjobs on them but it does the trick, and elite units have all been given different paintjobs to show them easily on the table.

I also finished off a Delaque Spyker from ArtelW to go with my Necromunda gang. Got a campaign hopefully starting up some time soon and this will be the first thing I save my credits for because I love the idea of taking an unsanctioned psyker as part of my gang.

Since then I've been working on a huge project for me, finally finishing the Easterling army I bought 2 years ago and have always burnt out before finishing anything. I painted up enough for a Battle Company a while ago, but now I've finished everything in the army except for the pikes (important part, I know) and Khamul's Fell Beast which I'll finish later on, because I know that if I start on them now I'll burn out again.

On the Table- Bakemono, Wastrels, Bayou

Back with another little hobby update, we're back in temporary lockdown here in Sydney so I've been making the most of it by finishing some projects off and getting warbands done.

First up I picked up a Bakemono warband for Bushido (I did say in my last post that I would be buying into Jung Pirates next, but I got a bunch of Bakemono for a good price and expanded from there) and got them all painted. These sculpts I absolutely love because they have so much character and I am a big fan of Bushido minis in general for this exact reason.

I also picked up the last box I needed for my McCabe crew for Malifaux, which gave me Cryptologists and Rough Riders. I have always loved using the Rough Riders with proxies, but now with their official sculpts (which are really awesome) I will definitely be using them a lot more while I play around with the McCabe changes and GG2. I already had Jessie Halliday unpainted from when her box came out, so I painted that at the same time, and the Cryptologists I really didn't like in the renders but having their sculpts in hand I warmed up to them a lot as they look a lot better proportioned and less janky in the flesh. I really enjoyed painting these all and the newer Malifaux sculpts are very often really nice to paint.

Most recently I've been putting in a dedicated effort in clearing the backlog, especially in getting all of my Bayou fully completed. Finishing bases has never been a strong suit of mine, and I like to procrastinate on them for a long time, so getting all of these done and finished is something that I am very happy with because I can get them all packed away and done for good, but also I can say that I have 6 keywords in Bayou almost in their entirety fully painted and based.

Bushido as a Beginner Part 3- Terrain Markers and The Future

Back to Bushido, and I’ve really dived in now! Been playing a few games a week for the past couple weeks and I’m having a great time learning all the tricks of the ninjas and finishing them off for good hobby-wise. Now that I’ve got them all painted (see the last one, Axiam, below) I worked on making up the terrain pieces for the Shadow Wind Clan so I can use them as options and have them represented properly.

For the terrain, the Smoke Fields (I made 3 because of the ways I can put them out mid-game, and I can’t see myself needing any more than this) were just based up like all of my models were while the Hidden Tunnel Passage got a bit extra work with needing the tunnel built up. I decided to also create a door for it to make it look a bit fancier, and the structure of it is made mostly from MDF offcuts from terrain kits that I built structure onto.

With those all finished up, I’m all done for Bushido until I get the inevitable 2nd faction or more ninjas, and I'm looking at shark business more and more... I am planning on doing some writeups about using the ninjas now as well, which should be done in the coming weeks as I play more games!

On the Table- Soldiers of Fortune, Legion, Bushido and Monsterpocalypse

Hi all! Quite a while since my last update and I've been up to a lot again in terms of hobby, getting a lot of things finished. Gaming-wise I've been almost exclusively playing Batman and getting into Bushido lately which is reflected a bit in what I'm painting, but I'm also jumping around a bit and trying to finish collections as much as possible.

For Bushido I already had most of the Kage Kaze faction painted, and now I have 3 more options finished that I expect to get a lot of use out of. The only one I don't own now is Axiam, and adding Dudiko and Karapan are going to be a huge boon in terms of list building options.

I almost had my Star Wars collections painted as well, with just a single ATRT for my Rebels and a few bits and pieces for my Republic. These are now all done, so both armies are all fully painted. More of them can be seen over on my Instagram

With the recent Godzilla vs Kong movie, Monsterpocalypse looked really appealing so I started to paint up the Empire of the Apes that I had picked up. King Kondo is my favourite sculpt in the range and I loved painting him, but General Hondo is also really nice to paint and I'm looking forward to getting into the rest of the ape units as well.

Last but definitely not least, the Soldiers of Fortune. Something I've talked about before on the blog from a tactics perspective, I really loved the idea of playing a Scarecrow crew and the fact Bane was in there as well just sold me on it. I've had a really great time playing Scarecrow and the Soldiers deck I love a lot, plus the models are really nice and I enjoy using them every time.

With that it's everything I've finished the last couple of months, and now I'm working on finally finishing my Goblin team for Blood Bowl and then finishing the rest of the Monsterpocalypse stuff I own.
